A State of Mine
NewCaliforniaRepublic.org (dissolved in 2006) - In
frustration over the re-election of George W. Bush in 2004,
this group began organizing to form a committee to simply
explore the idea of secession. "An independent California,"
says founder Jeff Morrissette, "would be able to direct more
of its wealth inwards." Morrissette, a former Christian
evangelical minister, is also deeply troubled by what he sees
as a coming American theocracy.

This movement is in the tradition of "Cascadia" - a geological,
ecological and climactic region of North America, generally
bounded by the Cascade Range and the Pacific Ocean. It is
often claimed that the region also has a shared political
culture. In his book "Nine Nations of North America," author
Joel Garreau claimed that the Pacific Rim region he called
"Ecotopia" had a different culture than the "empty quarter"
to the east.

The term Ecotopia, of course, was inspired by the seminal
politics fiction book by Ernest Callenbach. In this earnest
novel, Callenbach envisions the Pacific coastal states seceding
from the U.S. and creating an environmental and political
utopia.
